The stories we tell ourselves

Image
In a recent Instagram story, Crystal shared a snippet of a workshop she conducted. She shared a scenario, Greg interrupting her during a conversation.  She could get annoyed and think " Oh Greg's horrible, he interrupted because he doesn't respect me. " Or she could think, " Greg's very excited about his new project and he can't wait to share it with me. " And she'll feel very differently depending on the story she tells herself.  Crystal says, "We need to learn to separate facts from stories." The homework she gave to her attendees was to go home and think of alternative stories to something that has happened.  --- Was facilitating a workshop on Friday and we had to work together on a creative task. A student shared the activity was akin to improv.  Before we even began, I shared out loud, "oh no, I'm not creative. I'm going to do so badly at this."  Dave who heard my thoughts said, "that's the story you te...

Time block it!

If you don't time block it or put it in your calendar, it'll probably be forgotten. That's what happened to me. Said I'll do something.  Clean forgotten about it. Only now do I remember because I looked at my calendar and I have set an appointment with this person. And there's something I need to do. Taking time now to go and get it done. To me: Time block it.  Put it in your calendar!

I'm a fraud

Wanna know how important your master hand is? Play tennis.  Or hold the racket for 2 hours straight as you learn how to play tennis. Last night, I played tennis for the first time in my adult life and my whole left arm, wrist and even my fingers are swollen and aching. I can't even hold my 1 litre filled water bottle to my lips. It's quite amazing. We often don't appreciate what our bodies do for us until it breaks down. I remember when I broke a bone in my left foot.  Only in crutches did I appreciate walking and running. Even more amazing is how we forget the pain and the inconveniences right after we get better. I missed hiking so much when I couldn't for 4 months. Now, I haven't even hiked once this year. I've been feeling the effects of irregular sleep for many years.  Yet, I haven't taken a concrete step to fix my sleep cycle. I often say health is wealth.  But I'm a fraud.  I don't practise what I preach.  It's easy to do something big for...

How to Become a Confident Person in May 2023

3 things you can start doing right now. 1. Drink more water.  If you're like the average person on earth, you probably don't drink enough water. Add coffee, redbull or other soft drinks to the mix and your water intake is probably less than 2 litres.  Aim for 2 litres of water daily this month then 3 litres in the following month. Start drinking more water today. 2. Start a workout routine. When you work out, you feel more energised. When you sweat, you release endorphins too. These are the feel-good vibes you get after a run or a workout sesh at the gym.  I've never heard of anyone regretting a workout.  When you see what your body is capable of, you'll slowly gain confidence in your ability and in yourself.  Start with going for 5k walks. Or go for jogs thrice a week. Your body will thank you. 3. Find a way to better yourself: Start by reading Books have been around since 500 BC. They were hand-written scrolls then, but you get my drift.  They were writte...

Saving compliments

Back to reading Matthew Dicks's Someday is Today and he wrote how we often remember the bad stuff but forget the good things that people tell us, save for the ones that are truly memorable. He recommends building a file of compliments to refer to when our days get ridden with bad things happening or on days we need a little sprinkle to push forward. I'm trying to remembering the compliments I've received to start building my treasure trove of compliments.  I can't think of any. I remember one of my exes calling my unreasonable. Another one called me crazy. But I consider this a compliment because I believe all geniuses are blessed with a tinge of craziness in their blood. I remember my boyfriend telling me how he likes my writing and he can never write like me. Those are what I can think of in 3 minutes. Matthew also shared he forwards the compliments to himself in the future to resurface them and it always put a smile on his face when he receive one he has completely...

What's the milkshake's job?

What's the milkshake's job?  In the mornings, customers who bought the milkshake alone from the fast food chain said that they bought it to accompany them for the long commute to work. They've tried other alternatives like a bagel or a banana but none does its job as well as the milkshake. The bagel was too boring on its own so customers had to spread butter or jam that they placed between their legs while driving. It sometimes became messy. The banana did its job too quickly. Customers finished the banana really quickly and soon, they were left hungry before lunchtime.  In the afternoons, the milkshake did another job. Parents often ordered two meals to go for themselves and their child. Children love milkshake. As compared to saying yes to a new toy or to go to a new place for the afternoon, saying yes to a milkshake was the easiest and cheapest.  When you know what's the milkshake's job, it's easier to boost sales for the milkshake. In relationships, we all h...
